LGBTQ Organizations / Resources

NOTES:

  • I live under a rock, and I may not know the whole of any of these organizations’ backgrounds. If any of these orgs have issues which may make them poor choices for support, let me know!
  • This list focuses on LGBTQ non-profit organizations that work on a national level. I also further narrowed my scope to focus on orgs that specifically help LGBTQ (rather than orgs that work with allies awareness and such, e.g., PFLAG).
  • Also do let me know if you have any additions or thoughts on how to improve this list! For the most part, the descriptions for these orgs come directly from their websites, as well, so the descriptions below are not mine.

THE LIST

American Veterans for Equal Rights — A Veterans Service Organization of service members dedicated to full and equal rights and equitable treatment for all members of the U.S. Armed Forces, especially the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender current and prior military personnel.

BiNet USA — America’s oldest advocacy organization for bisexual, pansexual, fluid, queer-identified and unlabeled people.

Campus Pride — Campus Pride represents the leading national nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization for student leaders and campus groups working to create a safer college environment for LGBTQ students.

CenterLink — Supports the development of strong, sustainable LGBTQ community centers. They have a listing of centers in the U.S., so this can be a good resource for finding local or state-level LGBTQ centers to donate to.

Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund — The Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund works to elect LGBT leaders to public office.

Related: Lesbian Political Action Committee — LPAC builds the political power of lesbians and queer women by electing candidates who champion LGBTQ rights, women’s equality and social justice.

GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) — As a dynamic media force, GLAAD tackles tough issues to shape the narrative and provoke dialogue that leads to cultural change. (Taken straight from their website :P)

GLAD (GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders) — Since 1978, GLAD has achieved scores of legal victories to end discrimination based on sexual orientation, HIV status, and gender identity and expression.

GLMA (Health Professionals Advancing LGBT Equality) — GLMA’s mission is to ensure equality in healthcare for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals and healthcare providers. (In case you’re wondering about the acronym, it was previously Gay & Lesbian Medical Association.)

GLSEN — The leading national education organization focused on ensuring safe and affirming schools for LGBTQ students.

Human Rights Campaign — Civil rights organization working for lgbtq equality.

Immigration Equality — Advocates for and represents lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ), and HIV-positive immigrants seeking safety, fair treatment, and freedom.

Intersex Campaign for Equality (OII-USA) — Their mission is to attain human rights — particularly the rights to bodily integrity, self-determination, legal recognition, and de-pathologization — for all intersex people.

Keshet — Keshet is a national organization that works for full LGBTQ equality and inclusion in Jewish life.

Lambda Legal — The oldest and largest national legal organization whose mission is to achieve full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and those with HIV through impact litigation, education and public policy work.

Matthew Shepard Foundation — The Matthew Shepard Foundation’s longstanding mission is to erase hate by replacing it with understanding, compassion and acceptance.

Muslim Alliance for Sexual and Gender Diversity — The Muslim Alliance for Sexual and Gender Diversity (MASGD) works to support, empower and connect LGBTQ Muslims.

National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) — The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) is a civil rights organization dedicated to empowering Black lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people.

National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) — Advances the civil and human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and their families through litigation, legislation, policy, and public education.

National Center for Transgender Equality — The nation’s leading social justice advocacy organization winning life-saving change for transgender people.

National Immigrant Justice Center — The National Immigrant Justice Center’s LGBT Immigrant Rights Initiative is proud to work at the intersection of immigrant and LGBT Rights. We rely on the support of pro bono attorneys to provide comprehensive immigration services to those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender and those who are living with HIV.

National LGBTQ Task Force — The National LGBTQ Task Force advances full freedom, justice and equality for LGBTQ people.

Out & Equal — Out & Equal Workplace Advocates is the world’s premier nonprofit organization dedicated to achieving lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender workplace equality.

Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE) — The country’s largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older adults.

Sylvia Rivera Law Project (SRLP) — The Sylvia Rivera Law Project (SRLP) works to guarantee that all people are free to self-determine their gender identity and expression, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination, or violence.

Trans Student Educational Resources — Trans Student Educational Resources is a youth-led organization dedicated to transforming the educational environment for trans and gender nonconforming students through advocacy and empowerment.

Transgender Law Center — Transgender Law Center works to change law, policy, and attitudes so that all people can live safely, authentically, and free from discrimination regardless of their gender identity or expression.
